Hawker Harts of the SRAU (Southern Rhodesian Air Unit) fly over Cranbourne Airfield, Rhodesia in 1939. 6 Hawker Harts were the first military aircraft aquiered by the Southern Rhodesian Air Unit and was to form the first military aviation wing of the Southern Rhodesian Forces. Royal Rhodesian Air Force Provost T52. No. 4 Squadron which came into being on 3rd January 1956 was initially based at New Sarum,Rhodesia before moving to Thornhill Air Base in Gwelo. A Hamilcar Heavy Assault Glider deplanes a Tetrach tank of the Airborne Armoured Reconnaissance Unit on DZ 'L' on the evening of 6th June 1944. This was the first time in the history of warfare that tanks were flown into battle. Horsa Medium Assault Gliders can be seen landing in the background.
